Russia Shifts Long-Range Strategy to Jet-Powered Drones
Russia is replacing conventional propeller drones with faster jet-powered models, including Geran-5s, to challenge Ukrainian defenses.
The Federal Government of Russia is shifting its long-range attack strategy by reducing the use of conventional propeller-driven drones in favor of faster, jet-powered Shahed models. This transition includes the deployment of Geran-3, Geran-4, and Geran-5 systems, the latter of which is a version of Iran's Karrar drone capable of reaching speeds up to 373 miles per hour.
According to the Ukrainian navy, Moscow is prioritizing these advanced systems to bypass defenses. Former commander in chief Oleksandr Syrskyi stated that Russia intends for jet-powered systems to eventually constitute 50% of its long-range drone waves. The increased speed has outpaced many of Ukraine's first-person-view interceptor drones, although some manufacturers have since increased interceptor speeds to 230 miles per hour.
Despite the evolution of the drone threat, Ukrainian officials maintain that ballistic missiles remain the most significant challenge. This vulnerability persists due to a shortage of advanced interceptor missiles, such as the Patriot system.
