India Introduces Bill to Rename Kerala as Keralam
The Indian government introduced legislation to rename Kerala as Keralam amid parliamentary disruptions and opposition accusations of government overreach.
The Government of India introduced the Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2026 in the Lok Sabha on August 10, 2026. Introduced by Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai, the bill proposes renaming the state of Kerala to Keralam. The move follows a June 2024 unanimous resolution by the state assembly and subsequent approval from the Union Cabinet to amend the First Schedule of the Constitution.
The legislative process occurred during significant parliamentary deadlock. Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra stated that the logjam would persist until Union Home Minister Amit Shah addresses the House. BJP leader and MLA Rajeev Chandrasekhar described the name change as a milestone reflecting the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Simultaneously, the administration faced criticism over the reintroduced Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026. Congress MP Imran Masood accused the government of attempting to establish a dictatorship by seeking total control over national institutions, asserting that such actions are not tolerated in a democratic country.
