BC Conservatives Lead NDP in Polls Amid Health Care Clash

The BC Conservatives hold a five-point lead over the BC NDP as candidates debate health care privatization and tax cuts ahead of the October 24 election.

The BC Conservatives hold a five-point lead over the BC NDP according to an Ipsos poll released Tuesday, with 43% of decided voters supporting the Conservatives compared to 38% for the NDP. The BC Greens follow with 11% support. The poll indicates demographic splits, with the Conservatives leading among men and voters aged 35-54, while the NDP maintains a strong advantage on Vancouver Island.

Ahead of the October 24 election, Premier David Eby and the BC NDP have accused the Conservatives of planning a two-tier, privatized health-care system. Eby signed a public health-care guarantee over the Thanksgiving long weekend, arguing that Conservative income tax cuts would create a budget hole necessitating billions in cuts to provincial programs, potentially leading to nurse layoffs and clinic closures.

Interim Conservative leader Lorne Doerkson dismissed these claims as fearmongering and promised to keep health-care and education spending steady. The Conservatives countered by criticizing Eby's record, noting that over one million residents lack a family doctor and emergency rooms have closed nearly 2,400 times in two years. The candidates participated in a leadership debate on October 14 to address these issues, alongside voter concerns regarding inflation and housing affordability.
