Power Shortages Delay UK Loughton AI Supercomputer Until 2030s

The construction of the Loughton supercomputer in Essex, designated by the UK government as the nation's largest sovereign AI datacentre, faces significant delays. Originally scheduled to debut in 2027, the project may now be pushed into the mid-2030s after UK Power Networks informed the developer, Nscale, that the local grid lacks the capacity to provide sufficient power until that time.

In response to the shortage, Nscale is investigating onsite power generation and methods to accelerate the connection process. The project's struggle reflects a systemic crisis in the UK energy sector. Ofgem has warned of a connection logjam, noting that 315 datacentres are currently awaiting National Grid connections. These projects represent a total demand of 73GW, which significantly exceeds the country's peak energy demand of 45GW.

National Grid is working with the government-owned National Energy System Operator and distribution network operators to identify ways to accelerate connections and support economic growth. However, UK Power Networks noted that many datacentres awaiting operation are dependent on wider national electricity transmission network works before they can begin functioning.
