PrismML Releases Bonsai 27B for High-Performance Mobile AI

PrismML released the Bonsai 27B open-weight AI model, allowing high-performance local processing on Apple devices and PCs.

AI startup PrismML released Bonsai 27B on July 14, an open-weight model compressed to 3.9 gigabytes. The model is designed to run locally on PCs and Apple devices, including the iPhone 17 Pro, iPad, and Mac, while retaining approximately 90% of the performance of the original model. Bonsai 27B is built upon Alibaba's Qwen3.6.

PrismML's CEO confirmed that Apple Inc. is in very early discussions regarding the technology. This potential collaboration aligns with Apple's hardware strategy to utilize A19 and A19 Pro chips featuring neural accelerators to support on-device AI.

These developments come as Apple manages internal and external AI setbacks. The company faced internal testing failures for a rebuilt version of Siri in February and filed a lawsuit in July against OpenAI. Apple alleges that OpenAI engaged in trade-secret theft involving former engineers to facilitate the development of its own AI devices.
