U.S. Department of Defense Weighs Permanent Troop Cut in Kuwait

The United States Department of Defense is considering a permanent reduction of its military presence in Kuwait. While discussions regarding troop drawdowns reportedly began before the outbreak of war with Iran, the current deliberation follows a series of terrorist attacks and strikes on U.S. military bases that necessitated a temporary evacuation of personnel to mitigate risk.

During the conflict, Iran launched hundreds of missiles and drones targeting the Kuwait International Airport, port facilities, desalination plants, and energy infrastructure. Although U.S. air defenses intercepted most of these threats, American installations sustained significant damage. A specific incident in March resulted in the deaths of six U.S. service members.

Government officials in Kuwait have expressed concern that the current temporary reduction in forces may be transitioned into a permanent withdrawal. In response, U.S. officials maintain that the strategic alliance between the two nations remains strong despite the ongoing security evaluations.
