Zoox Launches Paid Driverless Robotaxi Service in Las Vegas

Zoox, the autonomous robotaxi division of Amazon.com Inc., will begin charging fares for its rides in Las Vegas starting August 10. This launch represents the first time in the United States that an autonomous vehicle service featuring no driver controls, such as steering wheels or pedals, will levy fares from passengers. The pricing model will utilize a base rate combined with trip distance and duration, with total fares displayed to riders before booking.

The commercial rollout follows a temporary exemption granted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. This regulatory approval allows the company to deploy up to 5,000 robotaxis on U.S. roads over the next two years and charge for each ride.

Before initiating paid services, the company conducted extensive testing involving 1 million riders. These trials took place across Las Vegas, San Francisco, Austin, and Miami, covering more than 3 million miles on public roads.
