UK Government Blocks £1.5 Billion Chinese Wind Factory in Scotland

The UK Government blocked Chinese firm Ming Yang Smart Energy Group from building a £1.5 billion wind turbine factory in Scotland over national security concerns.

The Government of the United Kingdom blocked Chinese firm Ming Yang Smart Energy Group from constructing a £1.5 billion wind turbine manufacturing facility at Ardersier Port near Inverness, Scotland. The decision, announced by Energy Minister Michael Shanks on March 25, 2026, prohibits the use of Ming Yang technology in UK offshore wind projects. Officials cited the protection of critical national infrastructure and national security, with Trade Minister Sir Chris Bryant referencing previous issues regarding espionage.

Scottish First Minister John Swinney condemned the veto, stating he was "blindsided" by the timing of the announcement and accused the UK government of "sabotaging Scotland's industrial future." Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes criticized the lack of transparency regarding the specific security risks involved. The project would have been the world's largest of its kind and was expected to create 1,500 jobs.

Ming Yang expressed disappointment, arguing the decision limits market competition and risks keeping energy prices higher for British consumers. The Chinese Communist Party dismissed the security concerns as "baseless and discriminatory." In defense of the move, UK Energy Minister Michael Shanks and Business and Trade Committee Chairman Liam Byrne argued that relying on China for strategic energy supply chains creates unwise dependencies in an unstable global environment.
