Ghana to Host UN Event on African Reparatory Justice

President John Dramani Mahama announced that Ghana will host a high-level side event during the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly in September 2026. Speaking at the 21st Extraordinary Summit of the African Union in Luanda, Angola, the president stated the event will allow established panels to present progress reports on the legal, political, historical, and cultural aspects of reparations for Africa and people of African descent.

This initiative builds on a June 2026 conference in Accra, where the campaign's mandate was expanded to include indentured labor as a historical injustice. During that period, the government established a High-Level Advisory Council on Reparatory Justice, a Global Experts Panel on the Restitution of Cultural Heritage, and a Global Legal Panel on Reparatory Justice.

Mahama, who was named the African Union Champion for Reparations in June, has invited all heads of state to join the effort for restitution and dignity. The upcoming UN event follows a 2025 resolution adopted by the United Nations General Assembly regarding reparations.
