PHLX Semiconductor Index Suffers Sharpest Drop Since June
Major chip companies saw shares plunge up to 12% on October 22 despite reporting record revenues and strong long-term demand forecasts.
The PHLX Semiconductor Index recorded its worst single-day decline since June 23 on October 22. Shares of leading chip firms, including Lam Research, Advanced Micro Devices, Micron Technology, and Marvell Technology, fell between 6% and 12% during the sell-off.
Despite the market volatility, the companies report strong customer demand and positive long-term outlooks. Lam Research reported record revenue on October 21, though it warned that limited clean-room space and parts shortages will hinder the industry's ability to meet demand into 2027. Micron Technology expects supply-demand conditions for memory and storage to tighten further through 2027 and 2028.
Other industry leaders are focusing on capacity and growth. Advanced Micro Devices is pursuing more advanced wafer capacity to increase its 2027 supply, while Marvell Technology has established a long-term revenue target of $70 billion to $90 billion for fiscal 2031. The current primary challenge for the sector remains supply constraints rather than a lack of demand.
