Akamai Report Finds Online Scams Surpass Traditional Phishing
Akamai Technologies reports that online scams doubled in volume during early 2026, driven by AI-driven automation and a shift toward direct financial fraud.
The cloud company Akamai Technologies released its 2026 State of the Internet: Fraud and Abuse Report, revealing that online scams surpassed traditional phishing in volume for the first time in the first quarter of 2026. Detections of online scams approximately doubled from 3.2 million to 6.4 million, as cybercriminals shifted toward direct financial fraud through investment scams and counterfeit storefronts.
Research contributed by Bolster AI indicates that the average lifespan of a phishing attack dropped by more than 50%, falling from 48 days in late 2025 to 22 days by the second quarter of 2026. This acceleration is attributed to the use of fast-rotating infrastructure, phishing-as-a-service toolkits, and AI-driven automation. Commerce brands, financial services, and high-tech firms were the primary targets of these impersonation attempts.
Regional data shows that Latin America and the Asia-Pacific region recorded the highest proportions of high- and critical-risk login attempts at 37.8% and 36.4%, respectively. To counter these evolving threats, Akamai recommends that security leaders adopt microsegmentation and intent-based behavioral inspection.
