Assam to Recruit 20,000 Police to Combat Drug Trafficking

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the Assam government will recruit between 15,000 and 20,000 youths into the Assam Police to increase employment and strengthen the state's security force. The announcement took place during a passing-out ceremony at the Lachit Borphukan Police Academy in Dergaon, where 32 Deputy Superintendents of Police and 371 constables completed their training.

During the event, Sarma praised the police for apprehending 26,537 traffickers and seizing drugs valued at approximately Rs 3,253 crore. He described the academy as a national-level training hub that now provides specialized instruction to personnel from Assam, Manipur, Goa, and other states, having produced 21,000 trained personnel over the years.

Following the ceremony, Sarma launched a two-day brainstorming session with Senior Superintendents of Police at the academy. The conference focuses on reviewing the state's law and order situation, with specific priorities on dismantling drug trafficking networks and preventing crimes against women and children. The deliberations aim to refine district-level policing strategies and improve response mechanisms to combat organized crime.
