SpaceX Buys $8 Billion Spectrum to Launch Mobile Carrier

SpaceX agreed to buy Grain Management's 800 MHz spectrum for $8 billion to establish Starlink Mobile as a major US wireless carrier.

Space Exploration Technologies Corp. agreed on October 8 to acquire the nationwide 800 MHz low-band spectrum portfolio from private-equity firm Grain Management for approximately $8 billion in cash. The deal, which awaits approval from the Federal Communications Commission and the U.S. Department of Justice, provides up to 14 MHz of paired terrestrial airwaves. This acquisition is designed to allow Starlink Mobile signals to penetrate buildings and dense structures, addressing a critical technical gap in satellite-to-cell connectivity.

Simultaneously, the FCC approved SpaceX's application to launch a Gen2 constellation of 15,000 satellites. These satellites are optimized for 2 GHz spectrum and are expected to provide over 100 times the bandwidth of current generations, connecting directly to unmodified smartphones. By combining these orbital assets with terrestrial low-band spectrum, SpaceX intends to transition from a satellite partner into a standalone facilities-based wireless operator.

The announcement triggered a significant market sell-off among incumbent wireless carriers. Shares of T-Mobile US, Verizon, and AT&T fell between 5% and 13%, while cell-tower operators like Crown Castle saw shares surge as investors anticipated a new terrestrial infrastructure customer. T-Mobile CTO John Saw challenged the move, arguing that SpaceX's total spectrum holdings are insufficient compared to T-Mobile's nearly 400 MHz and that satellite networks face significant path loss disadvantages compared to terrestrial sites.
