Bull Wins €387.8 Million Contract to Build LUMI-AI Supercomputer

The EuroHPC Joint Undertaking and the LUMI AI Factory consortium awarded a €387.8 million procurement contract to Bull to deliver the LUMI-AI supercomputer. Scheduled for deployment in the second half of 2027, the system will be hosted at the CSC – IT Center for Science data centre in Kajaani, Finland. The project is funded equally by the EU's Digital Europe Programme and a consortium comprising Finland, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Norway, and Poland.

LUMI-AI will utilize AMD Instinct MI430X GPUs and 6th Gen AMD EPYC 256-core processors. AMD hardware was selected over NVIDIA's Vera Rubin GPUs due to superior double-precision performance essential for scientific simulations such as climate modeling. The system will also integrate IBM Storage Scale and Nokia networking, utilizing Bull's French-developed BXI interconnect. It is expected to provide ten times the AI capacity and nearly double the high-performance computing capability of the existing LUMI system.

The facility will run on 100% renewable energy and use liquid-cooling to provide excess heat to Kajaani's district heating network. This contract follows the French government's acquisition of Bull from Atos in March 2026 to preserve strategic computing capabilities. LUMI-AI will serve as the backbone for the LUMI AI Factory and integrate with the co-located LUMI-IQ quantum computing platform.
