Rockstar Games Replaces GTA VI Discs With Digital Codes

Rockstar Games will provide digital download codes instead of physical discs for Grand Theft Auto VI, implementing regional locks and a specific expiration date for Japan.

Rockstar Games announced that retail copies of Grand Theft Auto VI will feature digital download codes instead of physical discs. This transition aligns with a broader industry shift, as Sony Interactive Entertainment recently announced it will cease physical disc production for new games by January 2028. The move has drawn criticism from collectors and consumers concerned with digital ownership and game preservation.

The implementation of these codes varies by platform. For PlayStation 5 users, codes are region-locked to the territory of purchase, affecting markets including North America, the United Kingdom, Japan, and Brazil. Conversely, Xbox Series X|S download codes are not region-locked and can be used globally.

In Japan, PlayStation 5 product codes will expire 170 days after the November 19, 2026, launch date. Rockstar Games implemented this specific window to avoid the financial registration and compliance requirements of Japan's Payment Services Act, which applies to prepaid digital instruments valid for six months or longer. Pre-loading for the title is scheduled to begin on November 12, 2026.
