India Becomes World's Sixth-Largest Economy With $3.92 Trillion GDP

India has reached the position of sixth-largest global economy with a nominal GDP of $3.92 trillion for 2025-26, according to International Monetary Fund data.

India has become the sixth-largest economy in the world, recording a nominal GDP of $3.92 trillion for 2025-26. The Government of India presented this data from the International Monetary Fund to Parliament, noting that the ranking is based on nominal GDP measured at prevailing US Dollar exchange rates.

Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary detailed a broad-based strategy to sustain this growth. The government is focusing on increasing agricultural productivity, expanding manufacturing through Production-Linked Incentive Schemes, and improving infrastructure via PM Gati Shakti. These efforts are supported by a liberalized foreign direct investment policy.

Financial stability in the public sector has also improved. Gross non-performing assets for public sector banks fell to Rs 2,45,634 crore by March 31, 2026, down from Rs 3,39,541 crore in 2024. Additionally, reported frauds in public sector banks decreased significantly, dropping from 54,850 cases in 2023-24 to 5,786 cases in 2025-26.
