Jeff Bezos Predicts AI Will Create Global Labor Shortages
Jeff Bezos argued at VivaTech in Paris that AI will increase demand for human labor rather than cause mass unemployment.
At the VivaTech technology conference in Paris, Jeff Bezos argued that artificial intelligence will lead to labor shortages rather than making humans redundant. He stated that AI will remove productivity barriers and enable people to identify more problems, thereby accelerating the transition from ideas to execution and increasing the demand for human work. This optimistic outlook contrasts with warnings from the UK's Trades Union Congress, a U.S. Federal Reserve governor, and Amazon CEO Andy Jassy, who previously noted that generative AI efficiency gains would reduce corporate workforce needs.
Bezos also detailed his work with Prometheus, an AI startup he co-founded in 2025 with Vik Bajaj. The venture aims to develop an artificial general engineer to optimize physical manufacturing and engineering for the aerospace and pharmaceutical industries.
Regarding space exploration, Bezos discussed his vision for Blue Origin to establish a permanent human presence on the Moon. He suggested that moving polluting industries off Earth and sourcing materials from asteroids and the Moon could return the planet to its pre-Industrial Revolution state. Additionally, Blue Origin CEO David Limp confirmed that reconstruction of the New Glenn rocket launch pad at Cape Canaveral is underway following a ground test explosion in May, with launches expected to resume by the end of the year.
