Former GOP Leader Jim Durkin Endorses Governor JB Pritzker
Former Illinois House Republican Leader Jim Durkin endorsed Democratic Governor JB Pritzker for reelection, breaking with his party to oppose GOP nominee Darren Bailey.
Former Illinois House Republican Leader Jim Durkin endorsed Democratic Governor JB Pritzker for a third term on October 5, 2026, one month before the general election. In a campaign video, Durkin broke with his own party to oppose Republican nominee Darren Bailey, stating that Bailey is "not cut out for the job" and cannot be trusted to lead the state. Durkin characterized Bailey as a "right-wing evangelist" and a product of "MAGA fever" whose loyalty to Donald Trump has alienated moderate and suburban voters.
Durkin praised Pritzker's fiscal management, infrastructure investments, and support for the state's assault weapon ban. Governor Pritzker welcomed the endorsement, describing Durkin as a public servant and a partner in rebuilding the state's fiscal foundation.
Republican nominee Darren Bailey responded by accusing Durkin and Pritzker of indifference toward Illinois residents. Bailey alleged that Durkin is seeking a future cabinet position should Pritzker run for president and criticized Durkin's 2019 collaboration with Mike Madigan to pass a gas tax hike. Illinois Republican Party Chair Bob Grogan called Durkin an "opportunist" and described Pritzker's tenure as a "complete and total failure." Bailey's running mate, Aaron Del Mar, further dismissed Durkin as a "sellout RINO."
