India Standardizes 27 Place Names in Arunachal Pradesh

The Government of India formally assigned standard names to 27 locations and geographical features in Arunachal Pradesh on Friday, incorporating them into the official maps of the Survey of India. The initiative includes 21 land areas, such as the border village of Longju and the logistics hub of Jairampur, as well as four mountain passes, the Sambho Sarovar lake, and the Sher-e-Thapa Memorial.

The Ministry of Home Affairs stated the move responds to repeated efforts by China to rename locations in the state, which Beijing refers to as south Tibet or Zangnan. Indian officials said the standardization aims to eliminate geographical ambiguity, reinforce sovereign jurisdiction, and facilitate administrative functions including census records and infrastructure planning.

India continues to reject China's renaming exercises. The Ministry of External Affairs warned that such baseless narratives could undermine efforts to normalize bilateral relations following the military standoff on the Line of Actual Control that began in 2020.
