UK Sanctions Russian Institutes and Individuals Over Chemical Weapons
The United Kingdom imposed sanctions on seven Russian individuals and two research institutes for developing toxins used to poison Dawn Sturgess and Alexei Navalny.
The Government of the United Kingdom imposed sanctions on July 6, 2026, against seven Russian individuals and two state scientific research institutes for their roles in developing illegal chemical weapons. The measures, which include asset freezes and travel bans, target the production of Novichok nerve agents and the Epibatidine toxin. These substances were used to poison British national Dawn Sturgess in Salisbury and Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny.
Sanctioned entities include the research institutes SC Signal and the State Scientific Research and Testing Institute for Military Medicine (GNIII VM), along with specialists and directors such as Andrei Antokhin, Viktor Taranchenko, Vladimir Kondratyev, and Artur Zhirov. Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper described the use of these agents as a sickening violation of international law and a direct threat to global security.
The announcement preceded a NATO summit in Ankara and the 112th Executive Council session of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. The Russian embassy in London rejected the allegations, calling them slander designed to justify confrontation.
