Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Weighs 2028 Presidential Bid Amid Accent Row

U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez stated in an interview with Politico that she has not ruled out a run for president in 2028. The admission follows a series of campaign stops in Tennessee and Michigan to support Democratic candidates Justin Pearson and Abdul El-Sayed.

During a July rally in Memphis, Tennessee, Ocasio-Cortez faced accusations from social media critics and political opponents of using a fake Southern accent. Detractors, including actor Michael Rapaport and strategist Steve Guest, claimed she adopted the cadence of a Southern Baptist preacher to appeal to a predominantly Black audience. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis also mocked the delivery, comparing it to a fake accent used by Hillary Clinton.

While campaigning in the South, Ocasio-Cortez urged Democrats not to abandon conservative states and noted that her policy prescriptions are rooted in her working-class background. Simultaneously, she is working to mend ties with the Democratic Socialists of America, which previously withdrew its endorsement of her due to her position on U.S. defensive weapons for Israel. Her recent itinerary included speaking to a crowd of 2,500 at the DeVos Place Convention Center in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
