King Charles III Opens Commonwealth Summit in Antigua and Barbuda

King Charles III and leaders from 56 member states convened in St. John's to mobilize $52 billion for climate and development projects.

The 2026 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) opened on November 3 in St. John’s, Antigua and Barbuda, under the theme Accelerating Partnerships and Investment for a Prosperous Commonwealth. King Charles III opened the summit, warning that international norms are under critical strain and that climate change has become a catastrophic reality.

Preceded by the 27th Commonwealth Foreign Affairs Ministers Meeting chaired by Everly Paul Chet Greene, the summit marks the first CHOGM under Secretary-General Shirley Botchwey. Botchwey has reframed the gathering as a summit of action, introducing direct engagement between heads of government and business leaders. The primary objective is to mobilize finance for a 52 billion US dollar pipeline of projects across 28 developing nations, focusing on green energy, climate finance, and skills-building for a youth-heavy population.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne reported early financial gains, including 200 million US dollars from the Nature Initiative and 1.3 billion US dollars from the Global Eye Health Summit. Other key initiatives include a planned trade and investment conference to target 2 trillion US dollars in intra-Commonwealth trade and reforms to the international financial system regarding sustainable debt. Deputy Prime Minister Mulipola Anarosa Ale-Molio'o emphasized the necessity of grant-based climate finance, noting that the world is already pushing past the critical 1.5°C threshold.
