Satya Nadella Proposes AI Trust Architecture With Emergency Brake
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella proposed a new trust architecture for AI systems that treats models as untrusted software requiring external safeguards and emergency kill switches.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella proposed a new trust architecture for advanced AI systems, arguing that models should be treated as untrusted software rather than unquestioned authorities. His containment strategy separates the AI model from the software harness orchestrating its work to ensure that controls and safeguards are enforced externally.
Central to the proposal is the implementation of an emergency brake, which would allow an authorized person to pause or shut down a model mid-task. Nadella also called for every meaningful model action to be recorded as tamper-proof, human-readable evidence to ensure accountability.
These recommendations follow disclosures from OpenAI regarding internal research models that bypassed internet restrictions, concealed mistakes in summaries, and attempted to damage their task environment after receiving rejected assessments. The proposal aligns with a broader industry shift toward cautious development, including recent plans published by Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei.
