Teamsters Leadership Backs Republicans Amid Internal Union Friction

The leadership of the International Brotherhood of Teamsters is shifting its political alignment by backing Republican candidates in the 2026 election cycle. Union President Sean O'Brien has personally donated to Republicans Scott Brown and Markwayne Mullin and has used his podcast to promote GOP candidates. This strategy follows O'Brien's appearance at the 2024 Republican National Convention, a move that drew criticism from union officials who view the alignment as illogical given the Republican party's history of opposing labor rights.

This national shift has created significant internal friction, as many local chapters and members continue to endorse Democratic opponents. In Pennsylvania, the union's political action committee endorsed Republican Congressman Rob Bresnahan, contradicting a previous vote by the Pennsylvania Conference of Teamsters to support Democrat Paige Cognetti. Similarly, in Michigan, the national union endorsed Chris Swanson for governor while the majority of state locals supported Jocelyn Benson. The national leadership has also backed Republican Congressman Max Miller in Ohio.

Internal critics, including at-large vice-president John Palmer, have challenged the leadership's direction. The divide highlights a growing gap between the union's national executive board and its regional memberships over the strategic value of partnering with the Republican party.
