Bitget Exits Japan Market Amid Yen Currency Volatility
Bitget will cease new registrations and exit the Japanese market by year-end following regulatory warnings and coordinated U.S.-Japan currency interventions.
The cryptocurrency exchange Bitget announced on August 3, 2026, that it will stop accepting new registrations from Japanese users and execute a phased withdrawal from the Japanese market. The exchange will forcibly close all remaining open positions for Japanese users by December 31, 2026, following a verification deadline on November 1.
This decision follows warnings issued by Japan's Financial Services Agency in November 2024 regarding mandatory registration requirements under the Payment Services Act. The exit coincides with extreme currency volatility, with the yen reaching a 40-year low near 164 per dollar in late July.
To stabilize the currency, the governments of Japan and the United States conducted their first coordinated currency intervention in 15 years, which briefly pushed the yen back to 155 per dollar. Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama and U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent both confirmed the coordinated effort to target the volatility.
