Qualcomm Launches 2nm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Series

At the Snapdragon Summit in Hawaii, Qualcomm introduced the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. Built using a 2-nanometer process from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, both chipsets feature Oryon CPUs with peak speeds of 5.0GHz. The Extreme variant is designed for ultra-premium devices, supporting 30-billion-parameter Mixture-of-Experts AI models on-device and cinema-grade 8K60fps video capture.

Qualcomm is positioning these processors as the foundation for a shift from phone-centric to agentic-centric models, where on-device AI agents coordinate tasks across applications without cloud reliance. This strategy comes as the global smartphone market faces a contraction, leading manufacturers to prioritize the premium tier. To support this transition, Qualcomm also announced the acquisition of Modular to create a hardware-agnostic software path for AI deployment.

Several manufacturers confirmed immediate adoption. Motorola debuted the Signature 27, the first device to use the Extreme chip, featuring Android 17, a 200MP periscope lens, and a cooling system that improves thermal performance by 40%. Xiaomi launched the 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max in Beijing on September 23, utilizing the standard and Extreme versions respectively. Other early adopters include OnePlus with the OnePlus 16, Honor with the Magic9 Pro Max, and iQOO with the iQOO 16. Meanwhile, MediaTek launched the competing Dimensity 9600 Pro, claiming superior power efficiency and camera processing.
