Russia Foils Ukrainian AI Drone Attack in Rostov Region

Russia's Federal Security Service disrupted a Ukrainian military intelligence plot to attack a military airfield in the Rostov Region using 13 AI-powered drones.

The Federal Security Service of Russia disrupted a planned attack on a military airfield in the Rostov Region. Russian officials stated that 13 AI-powered drones, orchestrated by Ukraine's military intelligence agency, were intended to destroy assets and kill personnel at the site. The operation was compromised when a recruit hired to execute the strike alerted Russian law enforcement, leading to the seizure of the equipment.

The drones featured AI-based targeting systems designed to bypass electronic countermeasures and were loaded with improvised explosives equivalent to more than 1 kg of TNT. Forensic analysis conducted by the Federal Security Service suggests the AI models used for the drones were trained at the State Aviation Museum at Zhuliany Airport in Kyiv.

Russian authorities characterized the incident as part of a broader series of Western-backed Ukrainian attacks conducted within Russian borders. The Federal Security Service claims the operation was a coordinated effort by the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine to escalate hostilities. There has been no official confirmation or denial from the Ukrainian government regarding the specific training of AI models at the State Aviation Museum or the recruitment of the individual who alerted Russian authorities.
