Nashville Mayor Files Legislation to Seize Data Center Land
Mayor Freddie O'Connell filed condemnation legislation to seize land via eminent domain to block a proposed DC Blox data center near the Nashville Zoo.
Freddie O'Connell, the Mayor of Nashville, filed condemnation legislation to exercise eminent domain and seize property at 648 Grassmere Park. The move aims to block the construction of a 50-megawatt data center campus proposed by DC Blox, which would be located adjacent to the Nashville Zoo. Mayor O'Connell stated the city has a legitimate need for the land to accommodate expanding departments, including the Nashville Department of Transportation and the fire department.
The action follows massive public opposition, including a petition that grew from 180,000 to over 500,000 signatures. Zoo officials and environmentalists argue the facility would create noise and light pollution harmful to animals, such as clouded leopards, and threaten the endangered Nashville crayfish. The property, currently owned by MarketStreet Enterprises, was appraised at approximately $37.4 million for 2026.
DC Blox denied claims that the project is an AI factory and stated it is seeking a resolution with city officials. Meanwhile, Metro Councilmember Joy Styles criticized the seizure as reactionary and potentially illegal. The Metro Council is also considering a temporary moratorium and new zoning restrictions that would prohibit data centers near schools, churches, and zoos in Davidson County, with a public hearing scheduled for July 7.
