Walmart, Target and Home Depot Report Resilient Consumer Sales

Walmart, Target and Home Depot reported sales gains as American consumers prioritize value and smaller projects despite economic pressures and rising fuel costs.

Major retailers Walmart Inc., Target Corp., and Home Depot Inc. reported sales gains this week, signaling that American consumers remain resilient despite slowing wage growth and dwindling savings. While spending continues, shoppers are becoming more selective and prioritizing value to combat high prices.

Walmart lowered prices on more than 11,000 items, roughly double its typical quarterly adjustment, to attract budget-conscious customers. Chief Financial Officer John David Rainey noted that fuel price increases have created incremental pressure on consumers compared to the start of the year, leading to fewer items per trip.

Target reported its second consecutive quarter of sales growth, highlighted by a nearly 20% increase in back-to-school sales over the previous year. Chief Merchandising Officer Cara Sylvester attributed this success to providing a combination of style, design, and value. Meanwhile, Home Depot observed a shift in behavior as shoppers moved away from major home remodels in favor of smaller projects and big-ticket items that do not require financing.

Economists expect consumer spending to moderate in the second half of the year, with a median forecast of 2.1% annual growth for personal consumption expenditures in the third quarter.
