Israel-Palestine Divide Shapes Michigan Democratic Primary Races

Intense intra-party debates over Israel and Palestinian rights are defining the Democratic primary elections in Michigan. Candidates across multiple levels of government are aligning themselves with opposing platforms, reflecting a deep ideological divide within the party.

In the 13th Congressional District, Shri Thanedar, an incumbent U.S. Representative, has moved from the Democratic Socialists of America to a staunchly pro-Israel position. He faces a challenge from State Representative Donavan McKinney, who pledges to end military aid to Israel. Similarly, in the 7th District, former climate activist William Lawrence is challenging centrist opponents by calling for an end to military aid to Israel to redirect funds toward domestic housing and social security.

Other races mirror this split, with State Senator Jeremy Moss running for the 11th District seat on a pro-Israel platform. Meanwhile, Abbas Alawieh, a co-founder of the 2024 Uncommitted movement, is running for state Senate. Alawieh recently met with former Vice President Kamala Harris to urge opposition to Israeli military actions in Gaza and Lebanon, maintaining that the Democratic Party was wrong regarding Gaza in 2024.
