Tesla Adds Production Shift to Clear Cybertruck Backlog

Elon Musk announced an extra production shift for the Cybertruck to clear orders before the line is dismantled for Cybercab expansion next summer.

Elon Musk announced Saturday that Tesla will add an extra production shift for the Cybertruck to address a significant order backlog. This production surge is a temporary measure before the company dismantles the Cybertruck line around June or July 2027 to expand production of the Cybercab, a two-seat robotaxi.

The transition is part of a broader strategy to pivot Tesla into an AI and robotics company. The move follows a period of declining performance for the Cybertruck, with U.S. sales dropping to approximately 20,000 vehicles last year from nearly 39,000 in 2024. These figures fall well short of Musk's original prediction of 250,000 annual sales.

Beyond sales figures, the Cybertruck has faced challenges including quality concerns, repeated recalls, and limited international appeal. Its unconventional design specifically hindered prospects in European markets.
