Amit Shah Announces Integrated Grid to End Border Infiltration
Union Home Minister Amit Shah unveiled a quadrangular security grid and a Demography Mission to stop illegal immigration and narcotics trafficking along India's borders.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah convened the first Land Border Districts’ Superintendents of Police Conference in New Delhi on July 9, 2026, to address illegal migration, narcotics trafficking, and drone threats. Shah announced the creation of an integrated, quadrangular security grid designed to shift India toward proactive border management and a smart border vision to make the country completely infiltration-free.
Central to this strategy is the Demography Mission, which studies structural population shifts and abnormal growth in border areas. Shah identified infiltration as the primary cause of these demographic changes and stated the government would apply a ruthless approach to curb them, including the demolition of illegal structures used as shelters for immigrants with forged documents. To support these efforts, the government is increasing border infrastructure investment by 400 per cent, which includes a 31,000 crore rupee project to fence the 1,610-km India-Myanmar border.
Beyond security, the plan incorporates the Vibrant Villages Programme to improve livability and prevent migration from border regions. Shah further committed to eliminating the narcotics menace within three years and announced plans to extend this holistic security approach to coastal borders.
