NIST Mandates Post-Quantum Cryptography Standards to Prevent Encryption Collapse

The National Institute of Standards and Technology mandated that U.S. federal systems implement post-quantum cryptography by 2035 to counter advancing quantum computing threats.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is leading a global effort to transition digital infrastructure to post-quantum cryptography (PQC) standards to prevent a potential quantum encryption apocalypse. This threat, often called Q-day, centers on Shor’s algorithm, which could allow future quantum computers to break traditional encryption methods like RSA. While no quantum computer has definitively run the algorithm, recent preprints from Google and a Caltech spinoff suggest capabilities are advancing rapidly.

Security experts warn of harvest now, decrypt later attacks, where adversaries steal encrypted data today to decrypt it once quantum technology matures. In response, NIST published PQC standards and mandated that U.S. federal and critical systems implement them by 2035. Current guidance from the United States and Britain recommends that organizations detail migration goals within two years and implement PQC in high-priority systems by 2030.

Private sector readiness varies. Google and Cloudflare have set internal deadlines of 2029 for full quantum readiness. While financial services are leading the transition, sectors such as healthcare, legal services, and government lag behind. Moona Ederveen-Schneider, founder of Resilia Connect, advocates for the use of tabletop exercises and a Practical Post-Quantum Transition Framework to coordinate stakeholders. Specialists recommend that organizations perform cryptographic inventories and adopt crypto-agility to swap out vulnerable systems as technology evolves.
