INEC Announces 2027 Election Dates Amid Calls for Transparency

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced the 2027 general election schedule, setting the Presidential and National Assembly elections for January 16, 2027, and Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections for February 6, 2027. Commission Chairman Joash Amupitan assured the public that the agency has overcome the technical glitches that hindered the 2023 electronic transmission of results.

To bolster public confidence, INEC plans to conduct a mock exercise on electronic transmission before the polls. National Commissioner Abdullahi Zuru defended the commission's preparations, stating that the agency is considering a mock presidential election to test its systems before 2027.

These announcements coincided with a policy brief titled 'Securing the Votes' presented by Yiaga Africa in Abuja. The organization urged INEC to publish a clear protocol for electronic transmission to the INEC Result Viewing (IReV) portal, arguing that the Electoral Act 2026 makes such transmission a mandatory legal record. Yiaga Africa specifically called for transparency regarding backend validation and a defined legal hierarchy to resolve discrepancies between physical and electronic results. These recommendations are intended for implementation before the August 15 Osun state governorship election and the 2027 general cycle.
