AI Boom Drives Government Pension Funding to 2007 Highs

Government pension funds reached an 85% funding ratio this year due to significant gains from investments in publicly traded artificial intelligence companies.

The Equable Institute reports that government pension funds have seen substantial gains driven by the artificial intelligence investment boom. Nationwide funding ratios reached 85% this year, marking the highest level since 2007. These returns are attributed to investments in 51 publicly traded AI-related companies, which comprise approximately 8% to 10% of these funds, excluding private holdings in firms such as OpenAI and Anthropic.

This surge in funding has reduced the financial burden on taxpayers, who typically provide the majority of the funding for public worker pensions. However, the institute warns that this stability is contingent on the continued growth of AI valuations. If the market corrects or if new government policies, such as robot taxes or data-center moratoriums, stifle the boom, taxpayers could face significantly higher pension bills. The report suggests such a downturn could lead to worker layoffs comparable to those seen during the 2008-09 financial crisis.
