Porsche AG Plans to Phase Out Taycan Electric Car by 2030

Porsche AG is reportedly preparing to phase out production of its flagship Taycan electric sports car by 2030. According to reports from WirtschaftsWoche and Reuters, company management and the works council have agreed in principle to end the model's production, abandoning previous plans to move assembly from Zuffenhausen to Leipzig.

The decision follows a sharp decline in demand, with deliveries falling from 40,629 in 2023 to 16,339 in 2025. Sales continued to slide in 2026, with only 6,000 units sold in the first half of the year. The downturn is particularly severe in the Chinese market, where sales dropped 32%, and has been further compounded by penalizing US tariffs and a consumer shift toward electric SUVs.

Porsche AG has not officially confirmed the phase-out. A company spokesperson cited a July statement from CEO Michael Leiters, who said there were "no plans to discontinue the Taycan in the short term."

The potential discontinuation is part of a broader strategic rollback. Porsche AG is scaling back its goal of 80% electric sales by 2030 and recommitting to hybrid and combustion models. This shift comes as operating profits plunged by more than 90 percent last year, leading the company to plan the elimination of approximately 9,000 jobs by 2035.
