Justin Drake Urges Crypto Bunker Mode After OpenAI Math Release

Ethereum researcher Justin Drake warned the cryptocurrency industry to prepare for bunker mode after OpenAI released mathematical results that could potentially break blockchain encryption.

Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake urged the cryptocurrency industry to enter "bunker mode" following the release of 722 mathematical results by OpenAI. Drake warned that AI-driven mathematical superintelligence could allow hackers to derive private keys from public keys, potentially breaking the elliptic-curve signatures securing Bitcoin and Ether wallets within months or even as quickly as one week.

To mitigate this risk, Drake suggested a gradual migration of funds to new addresses with unexposed public keys. Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin acknowledged that the risks from AI-accelerated mathematics are real but advised against panic or scrambling to move funds immediately.

Other industry figures dismissed the warnings. Jan3 CEO Samson Mow characterized the concerns as "silly things," while other researchers argued that AI is not yet capable of collapsing encryption systems like ECDSA. The warnings coincided with a dip in Bitcoin prices, which fell to approximately $82,300, amid rising 30-year Treasury yields and Federal Reserve minutes indicating expected interest-rate increases by year-end.
