Stewart Phillip Endorses David Eby and Emily Lowan
Grand Chief Stewart Phillip endorsed NDP leader David Eby for premier and Green Party leader Emily Lowan for her local riding ahead of the October 24 election.
Grand Chief Stewart Phillip, president of the Union of B.C. Indian Chiefs, issued dual endorsements ahead of the October 24 snap provincial election in British Columbia. Phillip endorsed New Democratic Party leader David Eby as the best choice for premier while simultaneously backing Green Party leader Emily Lowan for her candidacy in the Saanich North and the Islands riding.
Phillip praised Lowan as a "strong and courageous ally for Indigenous Peoples" and cited her evidence-based approach to the climate crisis. In contrast, Phillip criticized B.C. Conservative leader Lorne Doerkson, describing the Conservative leadership as a "bitter shmozzle of candidates" who represent a colonial past.
David Eby acknowledged the endorsement and noted his 20-year personal relationship with Phillip. While Eby admitted to past disagreements with Indigenous leadership regarding the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act, he stated that the province's success depends on working in partnership with First Nations.
Lowan is competing in the Saanich North and the Islands riding against NDP candidate Kala Bryson, Conservative Ryan Windsor, and Centre B.C. candidate Richard Smith. She has expressed hope that the Green Party of British Columbia can inspire non-voters and young people to participate in the election.
