Delhi Bans Non-BS-VI Out-of-State Vehicles to Curb Pollution
The Government of Delhi began enforcing a ban on out-of-state vehicles below BS-VI emission standards, causing massive traffic congestion at the Sarhaul border.
The Government of Delhi began enforcing a ban on out-of-state petrol and diesel vehicles that do not meet BS-VI emission standards on November 1, 2026. The restriction is part of the region's winter Graded Response Action Plan designed to reduce air pollution in the city. The ban bars non-Delhi registered vehicles, including BS-III and BS-IV private cars and goods vehicles, and will remain in effect until January 31, 2027.
Enforcement at the Sarhaul border on National Highway 48 led to significant traffic congestion, with vehicular queues stretching over a kilometer on the Gurugram side. The Haryana Police deployed more than 50 personnel to conduct manual inspections of vehicles entering the city.
Exemptions to the rule apply to vehicles registered in Delhi, electric vehicles, CNG vehicles, and out-of-state vehicles that comply with BS-VI norms.
