Pakistan Army Chief Urges U.S. Aid Over Afghan War Costs

Field Marshal Asim Munir, Pakistan's Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces, met with a delegation from the United States' Afghanistan War Commission at General Headquarters in Rawalpindi. The delegation, led by co-chairs Shamila N Chaudhry and Dr. Colin F. Jackson, acknowledged the role Pakistan played in regional stability and the sacrifices it made during the two-decade U.S. engagement in Afghanistan.

During the meeting, Munir emphasized the severe economic and security burdens Pakistan incurred throughout the conflict. He specifically warned that weapons abandoned by U.S. forces are currently being utilized by terrorist groups to launch attacks against Pakistan. Consequently, he urged the international community to provide the financial and technical assistance necessary to bolster Pakistan's counter-terrorism capabilities.

This diplomatic engagement follows Pakistan's efforts to act as a regional mediator. In April 2026, Pakistan facilitated a meeting between American and Iranian representatives in Islamabad to maintain dialogue amid Middle East instability. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has characterized Pakistan as a barrier between terrorism and the wider world.
