SERAP Sues NNPCL Over 211 Trillion Naira Financial Gap

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) filed a lawsuit against the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited at the Federal High Court in Abuja. The suit seeks a court order compelling the state-owned oil company to account for 211 trillion naira listed in its 2023 audited financial statements. The contested sum consists of 107.6 trillion naira in sundry receivables and 103.4 trillion naira in accrued expenses.
SERAP alleges that NNPCL failed to provide supporting documentation or adequate explanations for these figures, which hinders public scrutiny of Nigeria's oil wealth. The organization argues that because NNPCL is a government-owned entity, it must comply with the Freedom of Information Act to ensure fiscal accountability and prevent corruption.
Legal records generally identify the suit as No. FHC/ABJ/CS/1427/2026, though one source lists it as No. FHC/ABJ/CS/1426/2027. A hearing date for the case has not yet been scheduled.
