Australia Tests AusAlert System to Replace SMS Warnings

The Australian government conducted a nationwide test of Kristy McBain's AusAlert emergency warning system on July 27, 2026. The test triggered a 10-second siren and a full-screen notification on compatible mobile phones, tablets, and smartwatches, overriding silent and do-not-disturb settings. Developed following recommendations from the 2020 Royal Commission into National Natural Disaster Arrangements, the system uses cell broadcast technology to target specific mobile towers. This allows alerts to be geolocated within 160 meters without requiring individual phone numbers, reducing network congestion and eliminating reliance on single telecommunications providers.

Prior to the test, the National Emergency Management Agency and Wesnet warned that the loud alerts could endanger domestic violence survivors using hidden phones. They advised these individuals to keep devices off or in airplane mode for 24 hours. Other concerns were raised by state governments in Queensland and Western Australia regarding the system's inability to reach landlines in remote areas, as well as a lack of multilingual messaging.

Minister McBain stated that the test was intended to find and fix technical issues before the full system rollout on October 1, which will support the 2026-2027 bushfire season. To address regional gaps, the existing SMS-based Emergency Alert system for landlines will continue to operate alongside AusAlert. While the Australian Capital Territory has confirmed it will transition on October 1, other states have not yet fully committed to the adoption.
