JetBlue Launches BlueFirst Cabin and Expands New York Slots
JetBlue Airways Corp. is introducing a new domestic first-class cabin and purchasing LaGuardia Airport slots to reverse years of operating losses.
JetBlue Airways Corp. will launch a new domestic first-class cabin called BlueFirst this fall to attract premium travelers and increase profitability. The service will be available on Airbus A220, A320, and A321 aircraft that lack lie-flat Mint cabins, providing passengers with additional legroom, recline, and seatback screens.
This strategic shift follows several years of operating losses, rising labor costs, and intense competition from Delta Air Lines Inc., United Airlines Holdings Inc., and Southwest Airlines Co. The airline is also expanding its New York operations after agreeing to purchase takeoff and landing slots at LaGuardia Airport from Spirit Aviation Holdings Inc. for $58.5 million.
The company faces internal and financial instability, including the recent resignation of board members linked to activist investor Carl Icahn after he reduced his stake. While founder David Neeleman publicly raised the possibility that the carrier could go bust, Chief Executive Officer Joanna Geraghty stated the airline is not considering bankruptcy protection this year. JetBlue expects to generate positive free cash flow by 2027.
