Godot Engine Maintainers Struggle with AI-Generated Code Influx

Godot game engine maintainers are reporting a demoralizing surge of low-quality AI-generated pull requests that overwhelm the project's review process.

Maintainers of the open-source Godot game engine are facing a surge of AI-generated pull requests that they describe as draining and demoralizing. Rémi Verschelde, a project maintainer and co-founder of W4 Games, warned that these submissions often contain nonsensical code and verbose descriptions, forcing maintainers to second-guess whether contributions are human-authored or tested.

Core developers report that the influx consists of boilerplate changes, logic errors, and security risks created by users of large language models who lack a deep understanding of the engine's architecture. Adriaan de Jongh, director of Hidden Folks, characterized the trend as a massive time waster. The review burden has increased significantly, with developers finding that filtering out AI contributions often takes longer than writing fixes from scratch.

This strain follows a period of rapid growth for Godot, partly driven by developers leaving Unity after its 2023 pricing changes. While the community has not banned AI tools, maintainers are discussing stricter contribution guidelines and expanding the pool of trusted reviewers. Verschelde suggested that increased funding to pay more maintainers is the only viable solution to manage the volume of low-quality requests.
