Berkshire Hathaway Becomes Fourth-Largest U.S. Homebuilder

Berkshire Hathaway expanded its U.S. housing footprint through the $8.5 billion acquisition of Taylor Morrison and an increased 11% stake in Lennar.

CEO Greg Abel has transformed Berkshire Hathaway into the fourth-largest site-built homebuilder in the United States through a series of aggressive acquisitions and equity increases. Since assuming leadership on January 1, Abel oversaw the $8.5 billion acquisition of Taylor Morrison, which closed in July, and the purchase of McGuinn Homes by Mungo Homes.

In addition to direct acquisitions, Berkshire nearly doubled its stake in Lennar during the third quarter, bringing its total ownership to approximately 11%. These expansions occur despite a challenging housing market defined by high mortgage rates and shrinking profit margins for builders.

Lennar CEO Stuart Miller noted that market conditions have grown more difficult since June. However, Abel maintains a long-term perspective on the sector, asserting that the American dream will continue to exist and predicting the industry will be a strong asset for the company over the next five to ten years.
