Toyota Recalls 228,367 Sienna Hybrids Over Seat Back Defect

Toyota is recalling over 228,000 Sienna Hybrid vehicles in the United States because second-row seat backs may disengage during a crash, increasing injury risks.

Toyota is recalling 228,367 Sienna Hybrid vehicles from the 2022 through 2026 model years in the United States. The recall stems from a safety defect where second-row seat backs may fail to remain secured during a frontal crash.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that the force of such collisions could disengage the seat back from its locked position. This failure prevents the proper restraint of occupants, which increases the risk of injury during an accident.

To resolve the defect, dealers will update the supplemental restraint system electronic control unit software. For vehicles equipped with the Mobility as a Service package, dealers will replace both second-row seat backs free of charge. Toyota expects to begin mailing notification letters to affected owners on December 7.
