Amazon CEO Andy Jassy Launches Strategy to Cut Bureaucracy

During an annual conference for third-party sellers in Seattle, Andy Jassy announced a strategic initiative to reduce corporate bureaucracy and reset Amazon's culture to operate like a startup. Jassy aims to return the company to a "Day 1" mentality, prioritizing innovation over the red tape accumulated during the firm's rapid expansion. To achieve this, he mandated that leadership increase the ratio of individual contributors to managers by at least 15% by the end of the first quarter of 2025.

As part of this effort, Jassy established a "no bureaucracy email alias" for employees to report inefficient rules. The company has already modified approximately 455 processes based on 1,500 employee reports received over the last year. These measures are intended to strip away the bureaucracy that Jassy described as "anathema to startups and to entrepreneurial organizations."

This cultural shift follows several years of aggressive cost-cutting and efficiency drives. Since 2022, Amazon has laid off more than 27,000 corporate employees and transitioned to a strict five-day in-office work week. In an internal memo, Jassy cautioned that the continued integration of artificial intelligence tools will likely reduce the total corporate workforce in the coming years, noting that while some jobs will disappear, others will be created.
