Malaysia Births Drop 6.1 Percent in Second Quarter 2026

The Department of Statistics Malaysia reported that the country recorded 90,726 live births in the second quarter of 2026, a 6.1 percent decrease compared to the same period in 2025. Of these births, 46,953 were male and 43,773 were female.

Ethnic distributions shifted during the quarter. Malay births increased to 67.3 percent of the total, while Chinese and Indian births declined to 7.5 percent and 3.8 percent, respectively. During the same period, deaths rose by 0.6 percent to 49,827.

Despite the decline in birth rates, Malaysia's total population grew by 0.5 percent year on year. The government agency estimates the total population has reached 34.4 million people.
