European Electric Vehicle Sales Surge Amid Fuel Price Spikes

The European Automobile Manufacturers Association reports a sharp rise in electric vehicle registrations as record fuel prices drive consumers away from petrol and diesel cars.

New car registrations in Europe increased by 4.5 percent in August 2026, according to data from the European Automobile Manufacturers Association. This growth was driven by a surge in electrified vehicles, with battery electric vehicle sales rising between 52.2 percent and 62.7 percent. In contrast, petrol and diesel sales fell by 24.6 percent and 23.8 percent, respectively, as combined market share for combustion engines dropped to 29 percent.

The shift follows a second oil price shock in four years triggered by Middle East supply disruptions and a crisis in the Strait of Hormuz. In Germany, battery electric vehicle sales rose 75 percent after gasoline prices hit a record 2.31 euros per liter, while sales in France more than doubled. Year-to-date, new car registrations are up 5.3 percent, with electric vehicles capturing 23.2 percent of the market.

Among manufacturers, the BMW Group secured the largest share of electric vehicle sales. Volkswagen reported that orders for electric vehicles exceeded combustion cars in Germany for the first time, fueled by the ID. Polo. Norway continues to lead global adoption, with 98 percent of new registrations from January to August being electric. While Wood Mackenzie expects this trend to persist, the firm noted that sustained adoption requires significant investment in battery minerals and charging infrastructure.
