US Coal Usage Rises Due to AI Data Centers

The Energy Information Administration reports an increase in coal usage across the United States as the national power grid struggles to keep pace with rising electricity demand. This surge is primarily attributed to the rapid proliferation of AI data centers and a heightened requirement for air conditioning during periods of extreme heat.

While renewable energy sources continue to expand, utilities are extending the operational lifespan of existing coal plants and increasing their reliance on natural gas. This shift occurs because the construction of new power plants and necessary transmission infrastructure requires several years to complete.

Industry analysts indicate that shifting fuel costs have made coal more competitive against natural gas. This economic reality is creating upward pressure on carbon emissions and complicating national efforts to reduce pollution while simultaneously satisfying the growing appetite for power.
